About Dambulla

Perched 160 metres above the central plains, the Dambulla Cave Temple complex has been a sacred pilgrimage sanctuary for over twenty-two centuries. Five carved sanctuaries contain over 150 statues of Buddha and intricate ceiling frescoes.

Dambulla represents the pinnacle of ancient cave art in South Asia. In addition to its spiritual significance, the temple terrace commands sweeping vistas across surrounding tropical forests all the way to Sigiriya Rock Fortress.
